A film by Wolfgang Kold based on two choreographies of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Mikrokosmos & Quatuor nr. 4
1989, 52 minutes, colour
In the film Hoppla! made by Wolfgang Kolb, two choreographies by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker are brought together and performed to the music of the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók: Microkosmos, seven short works for two pianos and Quatuor nr. 4, Bartók's fourth string quartet. The reading room of the University of Ghent library, designed by the famous architect Henry van de Velde (1863-1957), served as location.During filming the music was performed live by the pianists Walter Hus and Stefan Poelmans on the one hand and by the Netherlands Mondriaan Quartet on the other. Mikrokosmos is a 'pas de deux': for the first time a male dancer enters Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker's universe. Four girls/women dancers perform to the string quartet. In Van de Velde's open space lit by large windows the black clothing of the dancers sharply outlines their movements. One senses an immense complicity between the musicians and the dancers: the exhilaration of playing music together and dancing simultaneously is as it were the artistic motor of this project. In Hoppla!, Bartók's dansant music, De Keersmaeker's inventive choreography, Van de Velde's austere space, and Wolfgang Kolb's dynamic editing are equally merged into one enormous convincing composition: therefore Hoppla! can be rightfully considered to be one of the milestones of the, still in its infancy, 'video-dance genre'.The choreography Quatuor nr. 4 was created in 1986 as part of the Rosas production Bartók / Aantekeningen (Brussels, 16-05-1986, CBA-theater).The choreography Mikrokosmos was created in 1987 as part of the Rosas production Mikrokosmos / Monument / Selbstporträt mit Reich und Riley (und Chopin ist auch dabei) / Im zart fliessender Bewegung / Quatuor nr. 4 (Brussels 01-10-1097, Kaaitheater / Les Halles de Schaerbeek).

Deze werd subliem gefilmd door Peter Greenaway, die eerder, onder andere, The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover, Prospero's Books en The Pillow Book maakte.

Fase: Four movements to the Music of Steve Reich
Thierry De Mey, who has worked on a number of Rosas performances, has approached the Fase project with verve. He has managed to turn the power of the choreography so as to create a film with an identity both authentic and independent. Fase, the film, in no way claims to compete with the dance, but explores it rigorously and precisely. In this way the film reinforces what was already present in De Keersmaeker's choreography.
The film, like the dance performance, comprises four parts based on the four parts of Steve Reich's composition.
Fase is a quite compelling choreography, which guides the spectator's gaze firmly, only to have him suddenly discover that in its order lies a deep emotion. by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker dates back to 1982 and was her second choreography. It was an immediate success and she and Michèle Anne De Mey still dance it today. Fase was an historic performance: it resulted in the birth of Rosas, the company with which De Keersmaeker made a name for herself in the international dance world. Although many of De Keersmaeker's choreographic works were filmed at a fairly early stage, many years passed before Fase was finally recorded on film: indeed, the film by director Thierry De Mey, who was also responsible for Tippeke and Rosas danst Rosas, is released a few days prior to it's twentieth anniversary.

Filmmaker and composer Thierry De Mey shot the film Rosas danst Rosas in June 1996 at the RITO School in Leuven (Belgium), a building designed by the architect Henry van de Velde. Rosas danst Rosas, a choreography for four dancers, was created at the Brussels Kaaitheater Festival in 1983.
Four dancers do battle; with each other, with the stage and with the public - a fight to the bitter end - set to the minimalistic music of Peter Vermeersch and Thierry De Mey. Meanwhile, the performance of Rosas danst Rosas has been staged all over the world and is still part of the repertoire of the dance company. The film is not a straightforward recording of the live performance but a cinematographic interpretation of this 'reference' performance. One camera records the dance itself and a second highlights specific details using close-ups ans panning camera movements. The way in which the images are edited gives the film an extra rhythmical layer.
The various casts which have performed this piece over the years illustrate the evolution of the choreographer's interpretation.
