Onder leiding van Herbert Wernicke werd deze productie bij het Gran Teatre del Liceu verzorgd. Wernicke introduceerde een nieuwe benadering inclusief met fragmenten van andere Händel opera's, zoals Rinaldo, Orlando en Tolomeo. Deze vrije interpretatie is niet bedoeld om de opera in een hedendaagse context te plaatsen, maar eerder om verborgen aspecten van het werk te onthullen: de psychologie, zijn geschiedenis en de politiek. Het orkest wordt geleid door Michael Hofstetter en de titelrol wordt gezongen door de Italiaanse-Spaanse countertenor Flavio Oliver. Een van de toonaangevende mannelijke sopranen in de wereld van vandaag. De Poolse alt Ewa Podles,in de rol van Cornelia, verkent het brede scala van haar warme, wendbare stem. Het grote succes was te wijten aan de prachtige score, waaruit Pergolesi's talent blijkt voor opera composities en het bijzondere libretto geschreven door Gennarantonio Federico. De humor en uitbundigheid van Lo frate 'nnamorato zijn te danken aan de komische middelen van het improvisatietheater, wat weerspiegeld wordt in de narratieve structuur en de relaties tussen de personages. Liefdes driehoeken, huwelijks plannen die op niets uitlopen en intriges leiden de opera naar de onvermoede uitkomst. De productie in Jesi uit 2011, gesitueerd in de jaren 50, beschikt over een uitstekende cast van zangers met tevens uitmuntend acteer talent. De productie balanceert tussen kwintessens en parodie, inventief met een gevoel van traditie en karikaturen. The opera is Bellini’s penultimate opera, coming after Norma (1831) and before I puritani (1835). This is the story of Beatrice Lascaris di Tenda, the woman who was the widow of the condottiere Facino Cane and later the wife of Duke Filippo Maria Visconti, in 15th century Milan. Filippo has grown tired of his wife Beatrice; she regrets her impetuous marriage to him after her first husband’s death, a marriage that has delivered her and her people into the Duke’s tyrannical power. In Beatrice very diverse elements coexist: there are music patterns already experimented in Norma and used here to their utmost potential, side by side with new ways and techniques, which would be treasured by Verdi. Compare, in particular, Ernani’s Filippo II and the dark and vacillating Filippo Maria Visconti tormented by remorse, ready to go back on his decision to condemn Beatrice, who once helped him, to death; or Eboli and the anguished Agnese; or Manrico in Verdi’s Trovatore and Orombello at the end of Beatrice, locked in the tower’s cell. One should also note that the concluding choruses anticipate some of Verdi’s rhythmic patterns, ”with a roughness, even, which up to then had been alien to Bellini”. Self-quotes and approaches similar to ones already used by Bellini in earlier works are undoubtedly present but do not invalidate the final result, which, heterogeneous as it may be, is worthy both from the point of view of dramaturgy - with characters and situations that are well drawn - and of the music. The chorus plays an even more important part here than in Bellini’s earlier operas, not only commenting on the action but advising and comforting the protagonists, in the true tradition of classical Greek drama.

Don Quichotte is brilliantly comic. Finished in 1910, after a career studded with successes, the opera was premièred at the Opera Theatre in Monte Carlo. It was a resounding success, fostered by the presence, in the main roles, of famous singers such as the Russian bass Feodor Chaliapin as Don Quichotte and Lucy Arbell as Dulcinée. A few months later, in December of the same year, it would be repeated at Paris’s Théâtre Galté-Lyrique, with Lucy Arbell this time partnered by Vanni Marcoux (Don Quichotte) and Lucine Fugère (Sancho Panza). The subject, from Cervantes’s masterpiece, had been versified by the young and extravagant writer Jacques Le Lorrain. The story is quite different from that of Miguel de Cervantes’s hero, appearing, rather, as a self-portrait of the poet himself: the knight becomes a model of virtue, of generosity, driven by lofty ideals; Dulcinée, from maid in an inn becomes a woman of the world. Massenet, who, despite the difficult period he was going through, conceived a rich score, full of verve and maturity.

En die zijn nodig om dit pakkende verhaal met zijn vele vermommingen, diverse locaties en verrassende ontknopingen geloofwaardig te presenteren.De sopraan Violeta Urmana vertolkte deze rol al in Covent Garden in 2004. It is based on Beaumarchais’ comedy Le Mariage de Figaro and tells the tale of the servant Figaro, who is about to marry the maid Susanna. Count Almaviva, keeping an eye on Susanna himself, tries to prevent this marriage with the help of Bortolo, the doctor, but is continually thwarted.This exquisite production by Peter Hall, Director of the National Theatre, features a host of renowned opera singers lead by Kiri Te Kanawa as the Countess, the role that made her an international superstar. Knut Skram’s charmaning and likeable take on the character of Figaro works very well with Cotruba’s gentle Susanna. Also noteworthy is the outstanding Frederica von Stade, celebrated for her performance in the trouser role of Cherubino.All in all it has to be pointed out that the singing accomplishments in this production are absolutely amazing from the principals to the smaller parts.
