Because of his lowly rank, humble sailor Ralph Rackstraw cannot marry Captain Corcoran's duaghter Josephine. Since Josephine can't bear her other suitor, Sir Joseph Porter, the unlikely Forst Lord of the Admiralty, she and Ralph elope, but are betrayed by jealous seaman Dick Deadeye. Sir Joseph, however loses interest in Josephine when he discovers that, due to a mix up as babies, her father is common and Ralph is of a noble birth... and the lovers are free to wed at last.
